The yellow flags have been risen all across the island in honour of the upcoming Phuket Vegetarian Festival. Without a doubt the most anticipated annual event, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival takes place from the 1st to the 9th of October 2016. Throughout the nine days of the festival, the island comes alive with many activities and events showcasing the deep rooted Thai-Chinese traditions of the festival.
During the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, we recommend you visit a Chinese shrine, sample some of the local Thai vegetarian food and take in one of the interesting processions that parade through Phuket’s Old Town.
The history of the Phuket Vegetarian FestivalÂ
In 1825, a traveling opera company came from China to perform for the many tin miners in the Kathu district of Phuket. Quite suddenly, the entire company grew sick from unknown circumstances. The company then decided to stick to a strict vegetarian diet to honour two of the Chinese emperor gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The sickness that had been affecting the entire opera company suddenly subsided.
The local people living in Phuket’s Kathu district were very interested in how quickly the vegetarian diet healed the opera company and they were curious to know how it was done. The answer given was that ritual vegetarianism and its ceremonies had been the cause of the members of the opera company healing quickly. The local people embraced this belief enthusiastically, and the first Phuket Vegetarian Festival was held in the ninth lunar month of that year.
