Songkran is a super fun event on the annual calendar in Thailand. Known as the Thai New Year, Songkran is deep-rooted in tradition and culture. The festival lasts for three days, but it truly is a mass celebration across Thailand. This year, Songkran takes places from the 13th to 15th of April and is sure to be a wonderful time.

Songkran has to be seen to be believed. Not only is it a traditional Thai festival, it’s also the largest water festival in the country. As April is the hottest month, the water feels cool and refreshing. Are you ready for a whole new lifestyle that will allow you to unleash your full potential? Do you have 21 days to dedicate to a life transformation? If you answered yes to any of these questions, now is the best time to participate in a detox program.

Detox has many benefits and there are many different programs to choose from. However, each program endeavors to achieve the same goal. That goal is to rid the body of toxins.

Over the last year, Santosa has welcomed a wide variety of guests from around the world to our detox retreat. All come with the common goal of transforming their lives and forming healthy habits. Many of our guests choose to stay with us for 21 days to participate in a well-rounded detox program. Is there a significance that comes along with 21 days? Studies have shown that it takes a mere 21 days to build a fitness habit or to make a new hobby stick. In addition, 21 days provide ample time for a transformation cycle with regard to a detox program.

What will happen during a 21-day detox program?

Even though you might be completely motivated to make a change, it can be quite difficult to do so if your every day environment remains the same. Outside forces can play an important part in your transformation, so choosing to take yourself out of your comfort zone can do wonders.

If it is possible, transport yourself to a healthy, nurturing environment such as the one at Santosa. A new, healthy environment full of people ready and willing to support you can make the experience of a detox that much easier.

A huge plus of coming to Santosa Detox & Wellness Center is that you will be participating in a detox program along with other guests. You will have an automatic support system of peers who understand what you are going through, making it easier to share the emotions, challenges and little gains and wins during the 21 days that you are here.

In addition to a detox program, you will be able to join a wide variety of on-site activities including fitness classes, Zumba, yoga classes, vegan cooking classes, nature walks and much more. Many of our guests find that they enjoy these classes so much that they turn into a hobby. For example, some guests upon their return home decide to continue going to yoga a few times a week.

During the 21 days you spend at Santosa, so many wonderful, positive changes are going to occur. Your perceptions of food and healthy eating, exercise and handling of your emotions will be transformed and viewed in a completely different way from when you first arrived.

Upon completion of a 21-day detox program, you will feel fresh and revitalized. Often times, guests mention that the feel lighter, both physically and emotionally, and that life in general seems a bit more clear.

Post-detox usually brings about a complete life transformation. Many guests continue on their health and wellness journey building upon the foundations learned during their detox program.

Santosa Detox Wellness Spa Phuket Phukets Festivals

A big part of the fun of living in Phuket or coming to the island as a tourist is being able to experience the local life of Phuket. While staying with us at Santosa, there will be plenty of opportunities to experience the local life by attending some of Phuket’s most iconic festivals.

February is a wonderful time to visit Santosa. The weather is beautiful and the sea is calm. In addition, the island celebrates Chinese New Year, the Phuket Old Town Festival and the Chalong Temple Fair all in the space of a few subsequent days. These festivals are all important to the island’s Chinese heritage, and it’s wonderful to see the island come alive with red, glowing lanterns, parades, fireworks and even a Chinese Dragon Dance! The Chalong Temple Fair is the largest of all of the temple markets in Phuket, and it is quite special. Here you can sample a variety of local foods, buy virtually anything and watch a handful of interesting Thai cultural shows and live music.

Another important festival to Phuket’s history happens in March in the north of the island. Thao Thepkasattri-Thao Sri Suntorn Festival is one of the island’s largest, most important festivals and features many cultural and sporting activities. This is a family friendly festival that celebrates the victory over the invading Burmese army led by Phuket’s two heroine sisters, Thao Thepkasattri and Thao Sri Suntorn.

April is without a doubt the hottest time of the year in Phuket and all of Thailand. Even so, it is a lovely time to visit Santosa and take part in a relaxing yoga retreat or detox program. April is also the time of the year when Thailand celebrates Thai New Year. Known as Songkran, the Thai New Year is loud and full of fun. Be prepared to get wet as there is a lot of water throwing that goes on in the streets. Songkran is a lovely time at Santosa, and with our close proximity to Kata Beach, you are sure not to miss out on any of the fun!

June brings the low season to Phuket, and it’s actually our favorite time of the year. While rain can be expected during this time of the year, we sure don’t mind. The rain nurtures all of the plants and trees surrounding Santosa, turning it into a lovely tropical oasis. If you are a runner, June is the month of marathons in Phuket and in the Old Town, the ever so lovely Baba (Peranakan) Wedding Festival is celebrated. This is such a beautiful event. Essentially, it is a mass wedding that is rooted in the traditions of days gone by. Baba (Peranakan) Wedding Festival features a gorgeous cultural parade as well that is great for taking photos.

The Kathu Festival takes place in July and is an interesting event. It takes place in the sleepy village of Kathu and features street stalls, food vendors, stage shows, live music and exhibitions. Thai traditional games are put on display and also played. If you are staying at Santosa in July, grab some of the new friends you’ve made and definitely head on over to this festival.

In September, the island’s Chinese heritage once again comes alive as Phuket celebrates the Por Tor Festival. This festival, known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is an important merit-making event for Phuket’s ethnic Chinese. Special foods, flowers and candles are offered to ancestors on altars.  Por Tor Festival is a truly beautiful event and gives insight into some of the special festivals celebrated by the local Thai-Chinese community.

Phuket’s most famous festival takes place in October this year, and it is one that you definitely do not want to miss. If you are looking to stay at Santosa for one of our health & wellness programs, we highly suggest you come in October so that you can witness the Phuket Vegetarian Festival.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival takes place in the 9th lunar month of the Chinese calendar and celebrates the Chinese community’s belief that abstinence from meat and a variety of other stimulants will help in obtaining good health and peace of mind. Phuket Vegetarian Festival is celebrated at all Chinese shrines across Phuket and features ceremonies, street processions and a large variety of delicious vegetarian food to be sampled throughout the 9-day event.

One of our most favorite Thai festivals takes place in November. It is a festival of quiet celebration called Loy Krathong. It is festival that takes place near all water bodies, whether it be the ocean, a canal or lake, as it honors the water goddess. People float lanterns in the sky and krathongs  across the waterways as an offering and to float all bad misfortune away from you in the coming year. Loy Krathong is really beautiful, and it is wondrous to watch all of the lanterns floating above Kata from Santosa Vegan Restaurant.

In December we celebrate the Christmas season and look forward to the New Year. For all of us at Santosa, this is one of the best times of the year as we reflect upon the year that is almost complete and look forward to the year the will come. We celebrate the Christmas season with a colorful, delicious vegan Christmas dinner menu and we also have a special New Year party.

Celebrate Phuket’s Unique Cultural and Historical Festivals with Santosa while you are celebrating yourself. Invest in yourself and your health at Santosa, and depending upon which time of the year you decide to come, you can experience some interesting fun in Phuket as well. Not only does it help others to read firsthand experiences of the center, but the feedback is a good way to learn valuable lessons. A recent guest at the center had this to say about her program:

Life Changing Emotional Detox – The Santosa family provide an all round emotional detox. Healthy eating / juicing, exercise classes, massages and amazing healers. The 3 day detox was extremely well organised and I could not have asked for more. Thank you to all at Santosa for having me.

In addition to the detox programs offered at Santosa, there are also a wide variety of yoga classes and fitness classes to kickstart your health into high gear. The personal trainer at Santosa is lively and facilitates challenging classes that will produce wonderful results. If you are looking to get into a lasting fitness regimen, we highly suggest the classes at Santosa such as HIIT and TRX.

The class schedule is really impressively full – in a single day I would take 2 – 4 classes and got to try new things such as TRX and FitBall.

There is an outstanding five-star vegan restaurant on the premises. The restaurant highlights innovative vegan cuisine and combines the highest quality produce and ingredients. The popular weekly buffet is a wonderful chance for guests as well as locals, expats and walk-in guests to sample our wonderful food. A sample of some feedback from Santosa Vegan Restaurant follows:

The restaurant is one of the best vegetarian restaurants I have seen anywhere in the world and the setting is relaxed and natural. The vegan food is a good transition to fasting and you won’t be able to enjoy it as you come off the fast as you have to start introducing food slowly.

For those of you thinking about a detox program, we urge you to read through the feedback on our TripAdvisor page. These are real accounts of what it is like to experience our center, written by visitors to Santosa and clients.

A Place to Rejuvante – I’ve never been to a detox retreat before and Santosa definitely exceeded my expectations. I’ve been quite stressed at work so I signed up to the emotional detox to help refocus and de-stress. The program was individualised, which consisted of group exercises, daily massages and vegan meals that were surprisingly delicious (I am not vegan, but seriously thinking about converting)! The individual sessions with Liana, Susanna and Karn were wonderfully encouraging and enlightening. It was the perfect setting to unwind and I felt completely rejuvenated. Thank you to the team at Santosa for having me.

Say Goodbye to Stomach Bloat

Say Goodbye to Stomach Bloat

Santosa Detox Wellness Center Women Eats Fresh Mixed Salad

While it is important to maintain a healthy diet loaded with nutrient dense whole food, are you aware that the manner in which you eat is equally important? Last week we started our “Santosa Healthy Eating Tips” series and got a very positive response. Through 4 tips we explained what happens when we are in the early stages of digestion, from the brain to the mouth to the stomach, and just how important gastric acid is. Now we would like to sum up these 4 tips to talk about the whole upper GI system.

Obviously the stomach plays an important part in digestion, however, did you know that the stomach is all about acid? The acid in the stomach helps with digestion and can also play a part in suffering a gassy or bloated stomach.

Always Remember to Chew Your Food

When eating, it is recommended that the food is chewed at least 25 times. Digestion starts from the brain, and when you smell and see food the brain will pass a message to the salivary glands. While chewing food in the mouth, the salivary glands excrete saliva and the most important enzyme, named amylase, will break down starches in the mouth. If you eat carbs, it is during this stage that they taste sweet. It is important to always chew your food well. If you don’t, the unbroken down starches will eventually end up in the intestine, and they can fuel the digestive issue known as candida.

What Happens in the  Stomach?

After the food is chewed, the bolus moves through the esophagus to the stomach. Here, the stomach continues the breakdown of the food as well as some chemical activities. When the food arrives in the stomach, the gastric acids of Mucous, Pepsinogen and Hydrochloric (HCL) are secreted into the stomach. Once the stomach churns the bolus and mixes it with gastric juice, the food is broken down even more into an acidic paste called chyme.

In this stage, HCL plays the most important role. The PH of HCL is 0.8, almost purely acid. If you don’t have enough gastric acid (HCL), meaning the chyme is not acidic enough, the pyloric sphincter will not let it pass through to the small intestine. Instead, they will stay in the stomach longer. The carbs will be fermented, protein will be putrefied and the fat will go rancid. All the good food you take into your body becomes toxins instead of nutrients.

When it doesn’t go down, you start to feel bloated and gassy. Sometimes it will even come back up, though it’s not acidic enough to let the pyloric sphincter open, but it’s way too acidic for the esophagus and that’s why you have a burning sensation. The stomach truly is all about acid. When we have enough gastric acid, the food is able to move to the small intestine in an efficient way.

The Importance of Gastric Acid

Gastric Acid is important because it plays an essential role in the immune system by killing bacteria and harmful parasites that are often ingested with food. Healthy gastric juice disinfects the stomach and stimulates gastrin. Gastrin is produced by G cells. When the food enters the body, G cells trigger the release of gastrin into the blood. In turn, food is broken down and digested.

Proteins are digested with stomach acid and enzymes, and they are much needed by the body to complete the digestion process. Enzymes break down protein and rely on stomach acid to turn them on.

If your body has a lack of gastric acid, you could feel bloated, gassy or suffer from heartburn. There are many factors that can contribute to a lack of gastric acid production, however, stress really is the biggest factor. If one eats when stressed, the body remains in sympathetic nerve system. This means the body is ready to fight and digestion isn’t its top priority. During this time, the brain will not pass any signal to your stomach to produce gastric acid, so you won’t be able to digest your food.

Avoid being stressed when it is time to eat. If you are a working professional, try not to schedule lunch meetings. If you are a parent, don’t scold your children before the eat so that they are anxious. All of us would be best to remember to put away our smartphones and tablets when it’s time to eat. Enjoy the moment and the food and digestion is sure to come easily and naturally.
