Meet the Future of Cancer Research

Eva Vertes – Meet the Future of Cancer Research

At 19 years old, Eva Vertes gave her first TED talk. She is an American Alzheimer’s and cancer researcher. Eva is also a known medical prodigy due to her vast medical knowledge and interest in the field.

While participating in her first TED talk, she spoke about her experiences in the medical field and what sparked her interest at a young age to pursue medical research full time. It was during a family trip to the Grand Canyon that Eva picked up a book called “The Hot Zone” that explained the outbreak of the Ebola Virus. It was the first time she was captivated by reading, as prior to this, books were not something that interested her. She fell in love with the book, and from that day forward knew she wanted to pursue a career in the medical field. Since then, it has been her passion.

After that trip to the Grand Canyon, she read every medical book that she could get her hands on. In high school, after sending many emails out, she was accepted to work in the lab of Dr. Jacob. It was in his lab that she studied the effects of heavy metals on the developing nervous system. She tested on fruit flies and found that heavy metals do in fact really impair the nervous system. From there, Eva no longer wanted to look at impairment, but the prevention of impairment. She became fascinated with Alzheimer’s disease, and started reading and researching Alzheimer’s to which extent would lead her on a life long research project.
“I was reading in the medical library one day, and I read this article about something called “purine derivatives.” And they seemed to have cell growth-promoting properties. And being naive about the whole field, I kind of thought, “Oh, you have cell death in Alzheimer’s which is causing the memory deficit, and then you have this compound — purine derivatives — that are promoting cell growth.” And so I thought, “Maybe if it can promote cell growth, it can inhibit cell death, too.” And so that’s the project that I pursued for that year, and it’s continuing now as well, and found that a specific purine derivative called “guanidine” had inhibited the cell growth by approximately 60 percent.”

Eva presented her findings at the International Science Fair at which she was awarded “Best in the World Medicine,” which allowed her an opening into the medical world. Now that she had been integrated into his world, she wanted to explore it all. During her studies in the medical field, she came across something called cancer stem cells.

She found that it seemed that tumors actually begin from a stem cell. She came to the conclusion that cancer seems to be a direct result to injury. When the body needs to repair an organ then it’s initiating cancer, it’s almost as if this is a repair response. Even though the body has initiated this ingenious response, it doesn’t necessarily have the means to control it. It hasn’t yet become fine-tuned enough to finish what has been initiated. Cancer, to Eva, is a cycle. We try to kill it with radiation and toxins trying to poison the cancer, but all this does is reveal the damage the body had previously tried to fix. Eva suggested that we should think about manipulation, rather than elimination. If somehow we can cause these cells to differentiate, to become bone tissue, lung tissue, liver tissue, whatever that cancer has been put there to do, it would be a repair process. The body would end up better than it was even before cancer.

It struck Eva that she’d never heard of any cancer in skeletal muscle in all of her reading and research she had done in the medical field. Eva asked why, the first thing she did was emailed some professors who specialized in skeletal muscle physiology, and pretty much said, “Hey, it seems like cancer doesn’t really go to skeletal muscle. Is there a reason for this?”

Eva got her answers and came up with some hypotheses that she would be starting to investigate that May at the Sylvester Cancer Institute in Miami.

Watch Eva’s spectacular TED talk, Meet the Future of Cancer Research, to learn more about Eva’s research and the conclusions that she came to regarding Alzheimer’s and cancer research.

How to Practice Gratitude

How to Practice Gratitude

The best time to practice gratitude is when there are obstacles in our way. In difficult moments, it is often hard to see positive forces as fears are looming. However, this is a good time to be grateful. Not for the things that have us stuck, but for the fact that we can appreciate what does not.

Gratitude can help us see the negative situations in a way that can lessen the bad feelings and panic, and open up our thinking to new solutions and ideas. More times than not, this is when we realize that gratitude requires practice. We have to recognize what we are grateful for, acknowledge it and appreciate it. Truthfully, this is not always as easy at it may seem.

The benefits of practicing gratitude can have an amazing effect on our lives, and often times, learning to be grateful is life-altering. Instead of focusing only on the negative, focus on the positive. Gratitude puts situations into perspective and helps us both the good and the bad which makes it easier to come to a decision. Gratitude also makes us feel thankful for what we have. The awareness of the things we are grateful for can lessen the desire to always want something bigger, better or more. Overall, gratitude makes us happier. It strengthens relationships, reduces stress, and also improves health.

Gratitude Improves Self-Care

Feeling grateful boosts well-being behaviors. When we feel good, we give our very best to others. Practicing gratitude improves self-care and encourages better physical health and psychological health.

When we practice gratitude and feel good, we eat right, we exercise more and we assess our overall health. Do we need to go to the doctor? Would we like to start a new exercise class? Have we taken time to pamper ourselves? Practicing gratitude makes dealing with these sorts of questions much easier, and chances are, feeling grateful and good will trigger wanting to visit the doctor, pamper ourselves or start a new exercise class.

Gratitude gives us happiness that lasts. It leads to sustainable forms of happiness and self-care. As gratitude is not based in instant gratifications, it is possible to say that if we regularly take time to practice thankfulness and express gratitude, we are likely to see results.

The Benefits of TRX Training

The Benefits of TRX Training

Santosa Detox Wellness Spa Phuket Women Doing Trx Training

TRX, Total Resistance Exercise, is an intense total body workout. It is a specialized form of suspension training that build muscle while combining both cardio and strength training. TRX is a popular class at Santosa held on Fridays from 10:00-11:00am.

Originally developed to train the elite Navy SEAL teams, TRX is a challenging workout that is effective and results driven. The concept behind TRX is quite simple. Participants suspend their body from a pair of cables on their hands or feet using both body weight and gravity as resistance to build up strength. How one chooses to position their body on the cables affects the targeted muscle groups and intensity of the workout.

What are the benefits of TRX?

One of the biggest benefits of TRX, in addition to its versatility, is that it truly works for everyone. TRX has great appeal and people from all walks of life have taken up the fitness class as many find it challenging and fun.

TRX will bring about a lot of benefits to the body. The exercise uses body weight and gravity as resistance to build up strength, lose fat and improve endurance and flexibility. TRX can really help participants achieve fitness goals.

During TRX, the body weight is leveraged to perform a variety of exercises that work the whole body but which also focus on your core. If your core is in tip top shape, it means you have abs or a six pack. If you wish to feel better, look better and move with ease, there is no better place to start than with the core. The functional movements used in TRX will increase overall core fitness.

Another outstanding benefit of TRX is that is also ensures you get your cardio in. TRX works out different parts of the body while getting the heart pumping. When using the suspension cables, so many various parts of the body are worked that the body’s requirement for oxygen will increase. When the need for oxygen is increased, the heart and lungs start working overtime to ensure that all of this oxygen gets to the muscles. If you take all of this into consideration, TRX is also a great cardio workout.

TRX workouts are often shorter workouts. For example, if you are used to working out daily for two hours, chances are you can complete a much more rigorous TRX workout in just an hour. TRX’s unique combination of resistance training, core strength, cardio, muscular balance and mobility means that you will get more done in less time. TRX is effective, efficient and save time, and let’s face it, time is something all of us need a bit more of in our daily lives.

Usher in the Chinese New Year at Santosa

Usher in the Chinese New Year at Santosa

Santosa Detox Wellness Center Chinese Laterns At New Year

Know as the Lunar New Year in modern China, Chinese New Year is one of the most important festivals celebrated by Chinese worldwide. The festival itself is an important celebration which is colorful, loud and fun. Interestingly enough, Chinese New Year never falls on the same date because it is based on the Lunar Calendar. Chinese New Year tends to fall between 21 January and 20 February.

Here in Phuket, we have many activities to ring in Chinese New Year. The island is decorated with delightful red Chinese lanterns. In the Chalong area, which isn’t too far from Santosa, the Chalong Temple hosts a really interesting temple fair. You can buy anything you want here – from clothes to plants as well as sample local food. There are cultural shows and events nightly, too.

Phuket Old Town also hosts Chinese New Year celebrations in the park with big, golden dragon statue. Here, the local Thai-Chinese community puts on many events and festivities. It is interesting to see Thailand’s take on Chinese New Year.

We love this time of year at Santosa. Although we remain busy with detox guests and maintaining our daily activities, including our weekly vegan buffet, we also ensure to sneak away to enjoy the festivities that Chinese New Year offers.

Welcome to the Year of the Dog

Chinese New Year is on Friday 16 February this year and 2018 will be the Year of the Dog. For those who aren’t aware, the Chinese zodiac moves in a twelve year cycle. The Chinese zodiac is quite fun, and depending upon the year that you were born, can say a lot about your personality traits.

Twelve animals make up the Chinese zodiac and are acknowledged every dozen years. However, this is the first Year of the Dog since 1958! Anyone born in the years 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, and 2018 are also known as Dogs.

For those born in the Year of the Dog, your personality traits include being communicative, serious and super responsible in the workplace. Does this describe you?

How is Chinese New Year Celebrated?

Across the globe, Chinese New Year is a celebration of sight and sound. Be prepared to hear bells ringing, firecrackers going off and watch traditional lion dances. Everything is awash in a sea of bright colors such as red, yellow and green. Seriously, we love Chinese New Year and its sensory overload!

Chinese families gather for a celebratory dinner on New Year’s Eve and spend the day cleaning their houses on New Year’s Day to sweep away bad fortune. Children are often given red envelopes stuffed with money. Known as Ang Pao, this lucky money also brings positive wishes for the new year.

Celebrate Chinese New Year at Santosa Detox & Wellness Center

While Chinese New Year is a joyous occasion for Chinese across the globe, much like any holiday it can be a time of overindulgence. Perhaps all of the delicious food has left you a few kilos heavier than before, or maybe you are just feeling sluggish and feel the need to be motivated to get your health back on track?

Santosa can help. We have a wide variety of detox and wellness programs that can clean your system from the inside out. Additionally, we have loads of cardio-based fitness classes, yoga classes for all levels, a lush sauna, a spa and so much more.

If you need to kickstart your health after Chinese New Year, we’d be happy to help you. For more information, simply fill out the inquiry form below. We are so excited to welcome you to Santosa!
