Based on the Taoist concept of yin and yang, opposite and complementary principles in nature, and lesser known than other types of yoga, Yin Yoga is for those who are exceptionally tired, over-stimulated and lacking energy. Yin Yoga is unique, and offers a great workout for the lower part of the body.
Yin Yoga consists of passive floor postures that are held for time periods of up to five minutes. The postures mainly work the lower part of the body including the hips, pelvis, lower spine and inner thighs. During Yin Yoga, participants will be asked to relax, soften the muscle and move closer to the bone. These type of postures offer a much deeper access to the body. Generally, time spent in these postures is much like time spent in meditation; calm and relaxing as the postures are held for a longer time.
Yin Yoga is often referred to as an intimate yoga practice. It offers a meditative approach with a physical focus. However, it is important to be prepared to deal with feelings, emotions and sensations during a Yin Yoga class. This style of yoga is often used in programs that deal with addictions, eating disorders, anxiety, chronic pain or trauma. Yin Yoga is the perfect type of yoga to practice during a detox and wellness journey.
There are a lot of benefits to this style of yoga. Yin Yoga calms and balances the mind and body, regulates energy in the body, increases mobility in the joints and hips and lowers stress levels. Yin Yoga also replenishes stamina and enhances flexibility in connective tissue and joints. Although the practice can bring long periods of time in uncomfortable positions, it does present deeper relaxation than other yoga styles and a great coping mechanism for anxiety and stress.
There are a few things to remember when practicing Yin Yoga that will further enhance your experience. Mostly importantly, find your appropriate edge. Move slowly and gently into the pose, and be careful not to stretch so far as to cause yourself pain. Stillness is an important factor of Yin Yoga, and it is something most people have to remind themselves of. Try to remain still without shifting or fidgeting in the pose too much. Lastly, no matter how much you would like to give up, always, always hold the position. Start with holding the pose for one to three minutes, and build up to five minutes or more.
Yin Yoga leaves those who practice with an amazing feeling after the practice. Roll out your yoga mat and give this wonderful practice a go!
