A new addition to the already robust programs menu at Santosa Detox and Wellness Center is the Epsom salt bath. Good for improving health, Epsom salt baths boost magnesium intake, ease stress, improve sleep, reduce muscle pain and inflammation, and flush toxins. Epsom salt baths also help clear congestion during illness. An Epsom salt bath is a safe, natural way to draw out toxins and replenish magnesium, of which unknowingly most of us are deficient.

What is Epsom salt?

Epson Salt

Epsom salt is actually not salt at all. In fact, it is really magnesium and sulfate. Epsom salt has been used for hundreds of years to ease all kinds of aches and pains. A simple soak in a bath with Epsom salt might make you feel better. The theory is that when one soaks in an Epsom salt bath, the magnesium and sulfate get into the body through soaking the skin.

Why do Epsom salt baths improve health?

During an Epsom salt bath, magnesium and sulfate are easily absorbed into the body’s blood stream. The skin is a highly porous membrane that takes in minerals and eliminates toxins every day. Using Epsom salt during a bath creates a reverse osmosis process. During this process, salt and harmful toxins are pulled out of the body and magnesium and sulfates are allowed to enter the body.

Magnesium is important because it plays a critical role in over 325 enzymes. Magnesium improves muscle and nerve function and improves blood flow and oxygenation throughout the body. Epsom salt baths helps improve magnesium deficiency by replenishing the body’s magnesium levels and sulfates. Other ways that Epsom salt baths improve health include:

  • Reduced inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
  • Relieves stress
  • Flushed toxins and heavy metals from the cells
  • Improved nerve function
  • Improved ability for the body to use insulin
  • Improved heart and circulatory health which reduces irregular heartbeats, prevents hardening of the arteries, lowers blood pressure and reduces blood clots

The use of regular Epsom salt baths has been shown to improve the symptoms of a wide variety of health conditions.

How to take an Epsom salt bath

The bath water should be very warm, not scalding hot, but comfortable to the touch. While the water is running, add the Epsom salt so that it will dissolve. Usually using 1 – 2 cups of Epsom salt is recommended for those who have a standard-size bathtub. During the Epsom salt bath, relax and keep the part of the body that hurts in the water for at least 12 minutes.
